Established in 2014, Westway LAB hosted a total of 74 artists in residency so far, in Candoso Creation Centre, during its 6 editions.
A lot of new music was created, new projects were born and most of all, a lot of value was added to these artists’ musical path. Be it by provoking the evolution of their creative process or through connections made during the festival, which boosted their touring circuit.
Considering that this year’s edition was transposed from spring to fall and considering that these confinement times are keeping us apart, we felt it was the moment to bring back the importance of being together by calling these artists to ask them how their Westway LAB experience was.
Next Friday, May 8, we’ll start to publish small videos with testimonials from some artists that were involved on the Artist Residencies, during those 6 editions of Westway LAB.
The first goal of this is bringing forth the real feeling of building a true community and breaking boundaries together. The second goal is finding ways to shape new collective projects that will fit in tomorrow’s reality.
We hope you get inspired by these messages as the future will push us into new creative challenges together.
Allan McGowan who was conference speaker at the 2019 edition of Westway LAB, has a handful of stories about music business where he himself acts as a character. He started working on record stores and then joined Chrysalis Agency.
From an aspiring artist (he was into drawing art) to a wide circuit agent, McGowan was among the first agents that booked tours in different countries in Europe. He was at MIDEM when the music business really started its grand transformations.
With all this experience, Allan McGowan is a respected speaker and moderator in conferences around the world. This is an in-depth interview to Pollstar website that is worth to watch or read here ➞ http://tiny.cc/fmyomz.
Due to the present contingencies we are facing, the Westway LAB felt the urge to assess the announced dates and decided to postpone the festival – conference – creation to October 14 to 17.
It is clear for us the importance of the role of Westway LAB on the qualification of the Portuguese music sector and, for this reason, we did not give up its realization in 2020.
All the efforts to maintain the lineup for both the festival artists and conference speakers are being made. We are glad to inform you that probabilities are optimistic so far and we believe that Westway LAB 2020 will have the shape we initially imagined.
The tickets purchased until now will be valid in October. All the information about requests for refunds and exchanges must be made exclusively by phone and by email firstname.lastname@example.org. All our ticket desks are closed until April 5.
:: Conference ::
With Rob Challice (Paradigma), Helen Smith (IMPALA), Daryl Bamonte (Schubert Music Publishing) e Charles Caldas (Merlim), assim como de David Ferreira (EMI-Valentim de Carvalho)

Westway LAB [Festival, Conference and Creation] takes place in the city of Guimarães, Portugal, since 2014. First names in the bill are just announced including international and Portuguese numbers like Tó Trips and Mão Morta Redux, who will score the movies ‘Surdina’ and ‘A Casa na Praça Trubnaia’, from the movie directors Rodrigo Areias and Boris Barnet, respectively.
After the period for artists to answer calls for the city showcases and the artist residencies, we have done the counting and we are proud to reveal the figures. 49 artists signed up for residences and 1141 projects applied for the city showcases. Now starts the hardest part for us… Anyway, what we know for sure is that some of these artists will be at Westway LAB, from the 15th to the 18th of April, in Guimarães.
WESTWAY LAB will be represented at Eurosonic Noorderslag (ESNS) 2020 edition program by Rui Torrinha, director of this Portuguese festival, that will take place at the city of Groningen, the Netherlands.
The panel will discuss the challenges and opportunities that music festivals may face in 2020 and beyond, as big corporate promoters define limits to small events at the moment of setting up their lineups and booking the artists.
🔔 Westway LAB calls artists once again to an unrepeatable and surprising experience at the heart of the festival’s creation – Centro de Criação de Candoso (CCC) – which has already spawned new musical projects and created futures (together) by crossing various talents, musical styles and geographic backgrounds.
If you’re a 🇵🇹 Portuguese artist, you can apply now❗️to be part of this international territory of creation and export, knowledge, sharing, networking and enjoyment in the musical universe 💫🌍🎶 >> tinyurl.com/wlab-artistresidencies
